PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

How did Jim Crow Laws institutionalize racism in America, especially in the South? Students will explore this question with this engaging online scavenger hunt. They will learn about the variety of restrictive voting laws, overtly excessive and stupid segregation ordinances, and the lasting impact of Plessey v. Ferguson.

Throughout the lesson, students will:

1) Respond to a Bell Ringer in which students will decide which restrictive law that resemble Jim Crow laws would upset them the most.

2) Read a short informational piece about where the term Jim Crow came from and how racism became overtly legal in the South.

3) Investigate actual Jim Crow laws online and determine what category of Jim Crow legislation it would fit into: limiting ballot access, miscegenation laws, or segregation laws. Students will also learn about the Plessey v. Ferguson decision and its impact.

4) Finish with an Exit Ticket that asks students to consider how Jim Crow laws impacted American society.
