With a push towards more rigorous standards across the nation, student talk in classrooms is fast becoming an increasingly more important resource. Discussion norms help remind students of social skills and appropriate ways to interact during discussions. Students may know the right or wrong answer to questions but may struggle with how to talk to other students about their thinking and their ideas.
This file contains 3 sets of age appropriate discussion norms on a one-page poster and also in a bookmark size. For grades 1-2, the norms are in a yes/no format with illustrative graphics. For grades 3-4, the norms also have picture clues but have more text and suggested ways students can participate. For grades 5-6, norm descriptions and examples have the most text. Bookmark versions come with each set.
