Encouraging student-to-student discourse is one way to create an authentic learning experience for your students. These discussion prompts can help your students to be fully engaged by sharing their thinking and creating questions to academically converse with one another.
Using these prompts will help you to manage the Common Core Speaking and Listening Standards. Students learn and practice the proper way to participate in a conversation by listening, thinking, and adding on appropriately to what others say.
You can display these prompts in a common area for all to see during whole group conversations or turn-and-talk sessions. The smaller versions can be put on rings for students to access during small group time or stations. They can also be distributed to reluctant students, giving them a way to participate in conversations without fearing they might be wrong.
