One thread within the Common Core State Standards that recurs throughout every grade level is English Language Arts--Speaking and Listening--Comprehension and Collaboration: Students will engage effectively in a range of collaborative discussions (one-on-one, in groups, and teacher led) with diverse partners on grade level topics and texts, building on others’ ideas and expressing their own clearly.
Some of my students have difficulty participating in small group discussions about grade level topics and texts. I created these visual prompts and frames to help them to formulate comments and questions related to the topics. To use these prompts, print, cut out and laminate the cards. Place them in a cup on the table. When an opportunity for small group discussion arises, encourage the children who have difficulty participating to use the cards to assist in formulation of comments and questions.
There are some students may need more direct instruction in the use of the prompts. These children may benefit from modeling and explicit instruction about the types of cards (I Wonder, Neutral, Not Sure, I Know, I Disagree) and when they would be used. For example, students could be taught that when they have something to add to a conversations, they might use an I Know prompt. Conversely, if they are unclear about what another student might have meant, they might use a Not Sure prompt.
