My review of the book:
Just My Luck by Cammie McGovern is a heartwarming and deeply moving story with strong social themes, life surrounded in a family with special needs.
If you loved R.J. Palacio’s Wonder, Fish in A Tree by Lynda Mullally Hunt or Sharon Draper’s Fish Out of Water you will also love Just My Luck by Cammie McGovern.
It’s heartwarming, powerful and easy to relate to the characters. Benny Barrows struggles with finding the just-right friends for himself and cannot ride a bike despite being in fourth grade. Yet his brother with autism can do amazing feats while riding. Benny blames himself for his father’s accident. He truly believes that his family has the worst luck ever; and considering the events it would be challenging to disagree. This is a novel providing inspiration to family’s experiencing tragedy and showing how a family can find the strength of stick-to-it-ness despite the odds being stacked against them.
I have read this book with my current grade 5 class, often stopping to look up to see my students so engaged with my read-a-loud, you could feel it in the air. It made me laugh out loud, tear-up and really think. Benny Barrows will remain in my mind and heart for many years.
