This is, by far, the most successful unit I have ever taught! This unit uses short stories to facilitate student questioning and discussion. Each story follows the same learning cycle:
1) Read for comprehension
2) Read for analysis and write develop open ended questions
3) Answer open ended questions and prepare for a discussion
4) Student led, scored discussion
5) Writing reflection
There are so many things that lead to it being successful.
First, it's completely aligned to the Common Core (standards included in document) and exactly what any administrator would want to see. Students are doing close reading, writing their own discussion questions, and participating in scored discussions each week.
Second, manageable for the teacher. I write 5 lesson plans for this unit (one for each "type" of day in the cycle) and only need to do minor revisions to update it for each story. Scored discussions make up a large part of the grading, so you don't need to grade 100 papers a week.
Finally, and most importantly, my students LOVE it. Right now, with two weeks left of June, every single one of my kids is engaged the entire period.
Feel free to edit it by changing the short stories to suit your available resources, student levels, interests, etc.
