Students reacts to the periodic table of the elements in different ways when it is first introduced to them: they may be fascinated by the content and/or scared that they will have to memorize the content. Dissecting the periodic table give students opportunities to study the periodic table in several pieces. Students become experts of particular groups of the table and teach other students. Apart from understanding the groups and periods of elements, students identifies various uses of elements in the real world, then transfer their knowledge by thinking of ways particular elements can be used to solve problems in the society.
Students will review physical and chemical properties and changes of matter, states of matter and classification of matter as they study elements occurrence and reactivity.
The activity encourages collaboration among students and emphasis math concepts like "parts and whole, whole numbers and decimals, subscript and superscript."
