5th grade math! NOW INCLUDING DIGITAL VERSION with links to Google Slides versions of the project! Project Based Learning! Real-world math application project! Decimal multiplication and division, fraction division, measurement conversion!
This project was designed to provide varying levels of challenge for fifth grade students. It is great for students to work on as an independent early finisher activity, during math centers, during small group instruction or as a distance learning project! It reinforces multiplication and division of whole numbers, addition, subtraction multiplication and division of decimals, measurement conversions and fraction division. It extends into sixth grade standards with division of larger whole numbers as well as calculating percentages.
It is perfect for on grade-level fifth grade students, advanced fifth grade students as well as sixth grade students who need to review fraction and decimal concepts. It is aligned to standards. 5.NBT.B.5, 5.NBT.B.6, 5.NBT.B.7, 5.NF.A.1, 5.NF.A.2, 5.NF.B.7, 5.MD.A.1, 6.NS.B.2, & 6.RP.A.3c. This is a fun and engaging project where students get to “go to the ballgame” and learn about the baseball players. They help calculate stats for the players such as batting averages, and solve problems related to the players. They even get a chance to stop by the concession stand! Students will love this fun math project! It even includes fun baseball facts and realistic baseball card stats throughout the project.
The entire project is differentiated into two versions: Team Blue Jays and Team Red Hawks. Students can work through the project solving both versions as they go, or they can just do one level—whichever level best meets their needs. Below is a description of each version.
- Team Blue Jays: Whole number multiplication up to three-digit by four-digit factors and division of whole numbers up to four-digit by two-digit numbers. Decimal multiplication and division to the tenths place. Fraction division—divide unit fractions. Single step measurement conversions.
- Team Red Hawks: Whole number multiplication and division with larger numbers. Decimal multiplication and division to the hundredths place. Fraction division—divide non-unit fractions. Multi-step and more complex measurement conversions.
There are 4 extensions included in this project which help differentiate the project to meet the needs students at all levels in your class! Both levels of the project provide a grade-level appropriate challenge, but these extensions really take it to the next level of real-world application! The extensions include both fifth and sixth grade concepts including
- Stay Hydrated: measurement conversion & decimal operations
- Player Salaries: multiplication and division of large numbers (to the millions)
- Concession Stand: decimal addition and subtraction and percentages
- On Base Percentage: calculating percentages
The project includes 20 pages of rigorous, real-world math application problems! A really fun project to get your students engaged in applying the skills they’ve learned in fifth grade math and to help prepare them for sixth grade math! I recommend having students complete the first two parts first, and then guide students to choosing an extension that is at an appropriate level for them!
The project opens as a ZIP file and includes a printable PDF version of each level (with answer key) and a digital version of each level in Power Point form which is compatible with Google Slides/Google Drive.
