With the national student debt at $1.3 trillion (2015), it is more important than ever that students understand the huge investment that is a college education. This activity has students identify a career, calculate the cost of college, and then calculate various loan repayment options. They will evaluate the cost of avoiding scholarship applications or failing a class in college.
This takes about two one-hour class periods for students to complete and is an excellent springboard for important discussions. Extension activities include inviting a guest speaker to share apprenticeship opportunities available or requiring students to write a scholarship application.
I highly recommend the film Broke, Busted, and Disgusted to accompany this project. A film guide is available in my Teachers Pay Teachers store.
