Teaching theme is one of my most favorite skills because students are not only learning how to deconstruct and understand text, but they are also learning valuable life lessons.
Theme is a tricky concept to teach, however. Some teachers teach theme as the moral or lesson. Some teachers teach using the “universal theme” concept which uses only one word such as “honesty” or “perseverance”. I like to make students aware of BOTH ideas.
In this pack, I have students practicing theme using the moral or lesson. I teach students to focus on what the character learns in the story. This helps them identify theme.

If you are interested in teaching theme using a "universal theme" that includes only one word, check out my "Teaching Theme In 5 Easy Steps" download.
If you have any questions, please feel free to message me. I will be happy to help!
