This multisensory Google® Slides distance learning resource is based on the principles of Orton Gillingham, also known as Structured Language Literacy. The focus of this resource is to support students in the early stages of writing development. This resource is designed for students in kindergarten, grade 1, grade 2 and grade 3; it is also designed for older students not working at their age/grade level.
Often, students with cognitive challenges such as working memory and with processing speed, struggle to coordinate all the skills needed to write, so this resource provided opportunities to develop some cognitive skills.
Specific areas include:
· Cognition and Strategy Development
· Writing Development
· Reading Comprehension
· Motor Skills through manipulation of text boxes on a screen (i.e. use of keyboard; holding
down keys to slide a text box).
· Word Order in a Sentence
· Processing Speed
· Working Memory
· Word Retrieval
Students are offered numerous opportunities to develop their knowledge for writing using this multisensory, cumulative, sequential resource. There are students lacking an understanding that there is an order to writing words in a sentence. Other students may struggle with handwriting and/or are unable to write more than one word without being drained physically and mentally (memory), Other students struggle with processing speed, and with this resource can practice to develop processing speed.
This resource is designed for younger students struggling to make sense of writing. This Google® Slide resource has options to support different abilities of different students. Students can work independently, once provided with teacher direction. Or, teachers/parents can work side-by-side with student, reading the information aloud to the student.
There are text boxes that students can manipulate, or the teacher can do, based on student responses. The skills are designed to be sequential, and each of the three levels have five slides so that based on student needs, teachers can use all, or just one slide per level.
Additional focus is placed on the following parts of speech: nouns and verbs. Cognitive strategies are provided to help student learn the “tricks” to figuring out how to unscramble each sentence.
There is a discussion related to specific parts of speech: nouns and verbs. Cognitive strategies are included to help student identify ways to figure unscramble each sentence. Unscrambling sentences helps with cognition so it is an important skill to develop. Further, the activities in this resource are designed to help "slow down" a student's mind that helps develop focus and attention.
Each slide, for each level, includes the same model sentence for continuity of student memory, and to support a student’s visual modality while developing his/her writing skills.
