Description

Looking for an engaging and effective way to help your students master distance-time graphs? This middle school card sort resource is designed to take the confusion out of interpreting distance-time graphs and get them thinking clearly and critically.

Instead of another worksheet, students work individually or together to match motion stories and graph shapes, helping them "see" the relationship between a written scenario and a visual representation of speed, time and distance.

Perfect for the 6th, 7th, or 8th-grade classroom, it bridges the gap between abstract lines and real-world movement through relatable stories and clear, scaffolded practice.

Why you'll love it:

Promotes Mathematical Discourse: Watch your students debate whether a flat line means "stopped" or "constant speed"—it’s the ultimate "Aha!" moment!

Perfect for Stations: Use it as a collaborative center, a warm-up "bell-ringer," or a fast-finisher activity.

Kinesthetic Learning: Gets students' hands moving and keeps engagement high.

Low Prep: Just print, cut, and store in envelopes or Ziploc bags for years of use. [Laminate or print on cardstock for extra durability!]

Cards included:

➸ 24 cards [12 graph cards and 12 motion story cards]
➸ 8 blank cards

Describe qualitatively the functional relationship between two quantities by analyzing a graph (e.g., where the function is increasing or decreasing, linear or nonlinear). Sketch a graph that exhibits the qualitative features of a function that has been described verbally.
NGSSMS-PS2-2
Plan an investigation to provide evidence that the change in an object’s motion depends on the sum of the forces on the object and the mass of the object. Emphasis is on balanced (Newton’s First Law) and unbalanced forces in a system, qualitative comparisons of forces, mass and changes in motion (Newton’s Second Law), frame of reference, and specification of units. Assessment is limited to forces and changes in motion in one-dimension in an inertial reference frame, and to change in one variable at a time. Assessment does not include the use of trigonometry.
