Not all boxes are used in the maze to prevent students from just figuring out the correct route. Students will have to successfully calculate the distance 9 times to complete the maze.

I used this activity with my Grade 8 Honors Math students and they loved it! After I introduced the distance formula, I decided to have them practice using it in a game-like atmosphere with this maze. They were engaged and completed the activity in one full 45-minute period.This is a real winner!

I used this activity with my hybrid class. I had virtual learners (all year and half of my class) and some in front of me. Having used Google Slides for most of our activities so far, I decided to try this one out with Easel, although I did print it out for some of the in-person students. The only difficulty was that my students didn't have the touchscreen Chromebooks to draw directly on the graphs, which was the big difference between Easel and Slides. I liked the maze and the kids did too. Good review of being able to count on a coordinate grid as well. It was a good assessment on whether or not they could identify where to plug in the values they counted into the formula.

This was a really good resource to practice working on the distance formula. The students who were paying attention to the directions had an easy time with it. The students who weren't paying attention had to do a few extra problems because they didn't listen to directions that they had to follow the maze. I was very pleased with this activity!
