In this task, students will locate coordinate points on a graph and then connect them to create a star. Students then calculate the distance between the points using the Pythagorean Theorem or distance formula.
A second activity is included asking students to create their own star and calculate the distances. My students enjoyed drawing their own stars in creative ways.
This is a great task to assess students understanding of the Pythagorean Theorem on a graph or the distance formula.
You will receive a PDF of the student handout (2 sides) and answer key.
Common Core Standards:
Apply the Pythagorean Theorem to determine unknown side lengths in right triangles in real-world and mathematical problems in two and three dimensions.
Apply the Pythagorean Theorem to find the distance between two points in a coordinate system.
