Distance on the Coordinate Plane using Absolute Value - Math Scavenger Hunt

This Math scavenger hunt activity consists of 12 task card problems involving calculating the distance of a line on the coordinate plane using absolute value. Students can determine the distance between two coordinates by counting the units and/or finding the distance using absolute value. Students can use the x-coordinates and y-coordinates to determine the distance. Students will also determine the perimeter of a polygon on the coordinate plane.

Each answer will lead students to the next problem. At the end of the activity you can tell students the first letter to fill in to complete a riddle. “GRAPH POINTS!”

This activity makes for a great math center and/or small group work! It can also be used for the entire class at once! Students can get up and move around the classroom!

Solve real-world and mathematical problems by graphing points in all four quadrants of the coordinate plane. Include use of coordinates and absolute value to find distances between points with the same first coordinate or the same second coordinate.
Understand ordering and absolute value of rational numbers.
Find and position integers and other rational numbers on a horizontal or vertical number line diagram; find and position pairs of integers and other rational numbers on a coordinate plane.
Understand signs of numbers in ordered pairs as indicating locations in quadrants of the coordinate plane; recognize that when two ordered pairs differ only by signs, the locations of the points are related by reflections across one or both axes.
