My students were having a lot of trouble telling the difference between these three writing styles. This lesson is designed around gradual release. Students take notes on the three qualities given for each style then use those notes to determine which is which for two themed sets of three examples each. They then write on an assigned topic before moving onto a freewrite in which they may write a narrative, expository, or biographical piece of their own. These freewritten pieces are crumpled up and tossed about the room so that each student ends up with one that is not their own. Students must then use their notes to decide which type of writing their example is and tape it to the whiteboard in the correct category. I hope it can be helpful to your kids, too!
