This file contains fun supplemental materials to teach the distributive property as a strategy to multiply. The activities can be used in a variety of ways including: whole group, independent practice, math stations, assessments, cooperative learning assignments and for differentiated practice.
The Run ‘Arrays” activity helps students recognize arrays broken up to solve multiplication facts. Cut and laminate as many sets as needed of the array cards and distributive property/equation cards. Students match the array card with the correct distributive property/equation card and record on their recording sheet.
The Case of the Missing Factor activity involves students helping the detectives complete the distributive property by finding the missing factor and solving the multiplication problem. Problems increase in difficulty. Students will solve a one digit times one digit multiplication fact and work their way up to two digit by one digit facts.
The Detective Rally Coach is used to have pairs help each other solve problems in class.
