TpT purchaser feedback:

"I really like the idea of using this type of manipulative with older kids. I think it adds a level of engagement that can be elusive with pen and paper. Nice job!"

"Wish I had you for Algebra all those years ago...These are great!"

"The students will enjoy this hands-on activity! Thanks for sharing. :)"

In this activity, the students are given a sheet of paper with 4 Algebraic Expansion questions, along with all of the steps required to expand and simplify the expression. This is not as easy as it may first seem, I have organized it so that the 4 expressions are almost identical except for the positioning of the negative signs, it causes the students to really think about the process.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Topics include:

* a monomial multiplied by a binomial ADDED to a monomial multiplied by a binomial

* a monomial multiplied by a binomial with a negative in the bracket MINUS a monomial multiplied by a binomial with a negative in the bracket

* the expressions are very similar, the only thing different is the positioning of the negative signs, this engages the students since the variables are the same but slight differences in signs

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

One option would be to photocopy one page per student or pair of students, have the students cut out the strips of paper, organize them in sequential order, then glue them down in correct order.

A handy tip: there are now glue sticks available that allow the students to reposition the paper incase they get one of them wrong, they simply lift the paper and reposition it! You could also have the students copy the steps down in the correct order, not cutting and pasting. Also, could cut out all of the cards, give each student one card, then ask the students to line up in the correct order, according the expansion steps of the Algebraic Expression.
