Teaching the Distributive Property in Multiplication can be tricky! Make it easy with this low prep game! This classroom tested game kept kids engaged for the entire session.
Copy Game board 1 onto colored paper. I like blue! Make sure you set the copier for 1--->2 sided. The game board should be two sided.
Copy game board 2 onto colored paper. I like yellow! Make sure you set the copier for 1---2 sided. The game board should be two sided.
Model how to play the game to the class first on a document camera. Model the game by playing a few rounds of teacher vs. class. Then, explain how this is a LEARNING game, so we help each other distribute the multiplication problems. Decide how you want students to partner up. Partner 1 gets a green copy of the game board, partner 2 gets yellow. Each student gets a die or the playing cards to cut out.
For students who don't feel confident playing in partnerships yet, have them join teacher at a back table to continue playing teacher vs. students.
Students add up their final answers on a separate sheet of paper for a grand total. Highest score "wins." But everyone wins because they learn quickly with this game!
