I designed this note page to introduce the distributive property of multiplication of higher numbers or factors to my fourth grade students. Following the notes in this activity, students learn to break apart higher numbers into factors they feel comfortable using. Students also use an array to model the problem with the factors they have chosen. Finally, students write the new equation and solve the problem. Included in the notes is a reflective writing response where students answer how knowing the distributive property can help them solve problems they do not know. For future reference, I have my students keep this page in their math folder.
