This activity can be used for review before an assessment, partner work, or individual practice after learning about the distributive property. The stations can be posted around the room in any order. Once students have created the equivalent expression, they are able to immediately check their work by looking for their answer in the upper-left corner of another station. If they find it, then they did the work correctly. If they can’t find their answer, they need to revise their work.
You can also have students model the original expression using algebra tiles and model their equivalent expression as a way of checking their work. Alternatively, they can substitute in a value for x into both expressions to see if they result in the same number.
