What educators are saying

These slides helped my students see the Distributive property visually. It was a great resource to use with remote learning.
This is an engaging way to review distributive property. We are fully remote and I use this activity on Schoology.

WHAT'S INCLUDED? (PRINT AND DIGITAL)

Game 1: Multiple Choice

Students choose the answer choice that correctly splits the equation apart.

Game 2: Write the Equations

Students put a black line in the array to split it. Then, they write the equations and answer in the boxes provided.

Game 3: Split the Equation

Students decide how to split the equation into two smaller equations. They type their equations in the orange boxes.

Game 4: Put Them Together

Students type in the equations for each array. Then, they put them together using the distributive property in the pink box.

HOW TO IMPLEMENT:

There are 11 problems included in each of the 4 games (total of 44 questions).

Digitally: The first problem is always an example for students so they know what to do. I would recommend completing 5 questions during your lesson together and assigning the other 5 for students to complete independently.

Print: Print the task cards out and put them in a math center. Have students record answers on the recording sheet provided. Students can use the self-checking answer key to check their work. You can choose between the color and black and white option.

Aligns with Common Core 3.OA.5:

  • Apply properties of operations as strategies to multiply and divide.2Examples: If 6 × 4 = 24 is known, then 4 × 6 = 24 is also known. (Commutative property of multiplication.) 3 × 5 × 2 can be found by 3 × 5 = 15, then 15 × 2 = 30, or by 5 × 2 = 10, then 3 × 10 = 30. (Associative property of multiplication.) Knowing that 8 × 5 = 40 and 8 × 2 = 16, one can find 8 × 7 as 8 × (5 + 2) = (8 × 5) + (8 × 2) = 40 + 16 = 56. (Distributive property.)

This aligns with 3rd Grade Texas TEKS:

  • TEKS 3.4G: use strategies and algorithms, including the standard algorithm, to multiply a two-digit number by a one-digit number. Strategies may include mental math, partial products, and the commutative, associative, and distributive properties

This aligns with Florida BEST Standards (B.E.S.T.)

  • MA.3.AR.1.1 Apply the distributive property to multiply a one-digit number and two-digit number. Apply properties of multiplication to find a product of one-digit whole numbers.
