What educators are saying
Description
This Google Slides resource is for students to practice procedural fluency, application, and problem-solving using the Distributive Property of Multiplication. Once students have conceptually learned the Distributive Property of Multiplication concept, the next step is to put it to use by solving math word problems.
This important multiplication property is introduced in the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics in the third grade. It is one of several multiplication properties used to make problems easier. The Distributive Property breaks down more complex math problems by distributing factors. Every grade level will build upon this math concept that becomes necessary in Algebra.
HOW IT WORKS
- The Google Slides practice is divided into 3 parts based on the Depth of Knowledge levels.
- In Part 1, DOK 1, students practice procedural fluency with writing Distributive Property sentences.
- In Part 2, DOK 2, students show their conceptual understanding and must decide how to decompose a factor.
- In Part 3, students solve 5 word problems at DOK 3. Each of the DOK 3 questions is divided into parts A and B.
- The question stems for Part 3 are modeled after the sample questions for the Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium assessment given to third-grade students.
- Students drag objects or duplicate objects to construct a model on some slides.
- On all slides, students will enter text into text boxes.
SUPPORT FOR STUDENTS
- All the slides provide more instructions and more information to the student in the SPEAKER NOTES section of each slide.
- Each section has a slide that prepares the student for work in the section with ideas, tips, or strategies to use.
- Part 1 and Part 2 each have a Reflection slide at the end for student reflection on what was learned.
