With so many books being turned into movies, what better way to engage our students than to bring that connection into the classroom? This art or language arts based project focuses on the incredibly well known and popular movie, "Divergent".
Through the PowerPoint students discuss the factions in the book and movie, "Divergent". They then compare the factions to the contrade, or neighborhoods, in the historic Italian town, Siena. This tie connects three disciplines together, language arts, art (art history), and social studies.
After discussing factions and contrade, the students are asked to design a logo that represents them. It must be a clean, simple, and strong design. They have to consider what personality traits they want to focus on, and how to best to that through their drawing. The logos of the Divergent factions and the Siena neighborhoods are looked at and discussed.
This PowerPoint includes talking points, Divergent information, historical information on Siena, pictures, tips on creating a strong logo design, and links to recognizable logos to discuss. Expectations and a break down of their grade is also included.
This project could be adapted for a Language Arts, Social Studies, Art History, or Studio Art class. This project is appropriate for students in 6th-12th grade.
