I believe that building skilled, passionate, habitual, and critical readers is the silver bullet to growing high-achieving students. A book like Divergent is great for this since it is engaging (teens in dystopian future, hooray!), current (movie tie-in!) and LONG (lots of time to practice!).
This complete unit contains the following for Veronica Roth's novel, Divergent:
1) Lesson Hook: Get the students interested in the novel with a lesson previewing the faction symbols and then use trailers from the upcoming movies.
2) Pacing Guide: Includes audio book track length (based on the CD audio book: ISBN # 978-0062286437 and pagination based on paperback book ISBN # 978-0062024039) to help you plan.
3) Comprehension Frames: Check for understanding and have students practice using academic language and listening to a partner after EVERY chapter.
4) Character Notes: How to set up students' notebooks and the information they will eventually put in them for 22 characters.
