Teach your students about diversity, acceptance, and unity through these engaging lessons. Lessons are designed to be taught over a three day period with one lesson per day. Each lesson is approximately 30 minutes in duration. The first lesson includes reading a book to students about differences among people followed by a group project designing a unity flag or symbol. The second lesson consists of reading an original story about a clarinet who is nervous he will not fit in with the other instruments of the orchestra because he will sound and look different. This is followed by a pop-art piece depicting diversities coming together in unity. The third lesson is an original writing of lyrics, for voice, to the melody "Ode to Joy". Teach all three lessons or pick and choose what works best for your classroom. These lessons are excellent for music educators and can be taught any time of year or in conjunction with Martin Luther King Jr. activities.
