Description

The purpose of this resource is to raise awareness of discrimination in outdoor spaces and to teach about the benefits of diversity. This workbook is divided into five sections. One section will be completed by students each day, along with other discussions and activities outlined in the teacher’s guide. This workbook is meant to be used to complement important discussions pertaining to racism, privilege, discrimination and diversity. 

Content Warning: This resource covers a sensitive topic, including discussions of violence. It can lead to students asking difficult questions. Be prepared to have thoughtful and purposeful discussions with students. Create a safe and non-judgemental space within your classroom.

Estimated Lesson Duration: 1 week (75 minutes for daily lessons)

Learning Goals:

  • We are learning about issues affecting diversity in the outdoors.
  • We are learning about different forms of racism and discrimination that exist in society. 
  • We are learning how to respond to racism and discrimination in a way that makes outdoor spaces, and society as a whole, more inclusive.

This workbook can be completed digitally through TpT’s Digital Activity Tool.

Assessment:

  • Assess “Diversity in the Outdoors” workbook for accuracy and completion
  • Provide students with level 1-4 for their Action Plan using the provided rubric and include descriptive contents
  • Teacher-student conference about diversity in the outdoors to assess understanding of key concepts and vocabulary
