Students must rearrange 9 puzzle pieces so that the answers match the problem on each side of the puzzle piece. Once finished, the puzzle will be a 3 x 3 grid which is easily checked by teacher using the "mystery word" that it spells (left to right, top to bottom). In this case "brickyard". This puzzle contains problems involving dividing four digit whole numbers by two digit whole numbers - with remainders.
This puzzle is intended for fifth grade use, but may be good practice for 4th or 6th.
I have used puzzles like this in my remediation class of 6 fifth grade boys who eagerly solved problems in order to "beat" the other teams.
