Dividing a Four digit number with Remainder - exciting 3D Animation video

Attention Getting Question:
Have you ever tried to divide a four-digit number that does not divide evenly?

Introduction:

Division allows us to determine the number of equal sized groups will make up the number being split. For instance, six divided by two will yield three. This means that either there are two groups of three items or three groups of two items.
To refresh your memory, the dividend is the number being divided and the divisor is what we are dividing by. The quotient is the result of the division. Sometimes when we divide, the numbers being divided do not leave a whole number result. This is when we will have an answer with a remainder. A remainder is the number left over when we have performed all of the division we can.
Subject:
Pretend you are saving money to buy the new, top of the line, game system that costs $1,399. The game system will be released in 9 months, which gives you a lot of time to save money. If you want to save the same amount of money each month, how much should save in order to buy the game system at the end of the last month? We can use division to help determine the total to save each month. We will use the standard algorithm for division to help with this process. Since we want to divide 1,399 by 9, we will place the 1,399 inside of the division bar because it is the dividend, and the 9 outside of the division bar because it is the divisor. Start by looking at the first digits of the dividend. Nine does not go into 1, but will go into 13, 1 time. Therefore, we will put a 1 outside of the division bar, above the 3 where the quotient goes. One times 9 is 9 so we will write a 9 below the 13 and subtract the two numbers to get 4. After bringing down the rest of the digits, we are left with 499. Looking at just the 49, 9 will divide 49 five times evenly. 5 times 9 is 45, so we write 45 below the 49 and subtract the two numbers to get 4. Bringing down the rest of the digits, we are left with 49. Again, looking at the 49, 9 will divide 49 five times evenly. 5 times 9 is 45, so we will write 45 below the 49 and subtract the numbers. This time, we are left with a 4. Since 9 will not divide 4 evenly, the 4 is a remainder because it is remaining after we have done all of the division we can. We will write our answer as 155 r4. This means you have to save about 156 dollars each of the 9 months to be able to buy the game system.

Summary:

In summary, division is extremely useful when we are trying to determine the size and number of equal parts that make up another number. The divisor is the number that is what we are dividing by and goes on the outside of the division bar. The dividend is the number being divided and is placed on the inside of the division bar. When the divisor does not fit evenly into the dividend, we will end up with a remainder. It is written with a lower case r, followed by the number that is the remainder. Now that you see dividing a four-digit number is easy, you can do it, too!
