Students examine the causes of the Civil War with this close reading and assessment. The informational text is broken down into eleven chunks that students analyze in a close reading format.

Dividing a Nation: The Road to Civil War- Informational Text:
The text is broken down into a guided passage for each event leading to war. Students will read the text several times, clarify main ideas with illustrations, and gain a deeper level of understanding regarding the events that contributed to the divide of our nation.
The culminating activity requires students to apply the information learned from the close reading, which can also serve as a formative assessment. Students are required to match each event with the corresponding description of how that event further divided the country.
