This no-prep packet is perfect for your division unit! All the problems in this lesson follow a standard pattern and have a 1-digit divisor, a 3-digit dividend, and a 3-digit quotient. This uniformity was intentional as it allows students ample practice to master the division cycle. By keeping the algorithm the same from problem to problem, kids memorize the steps of long division and gain confidence to prepare them when the numbers start to change. An example of this would be 947 divided by 5. Kids first divide 5 into 9 and then find the remainder and divide 5 into 49 and so on. They repeat the division cycle three times in each problem.
We all know that long division is one of the toughest math skills to teach. For many years it caused many meltdowns in my class-from the students and me, the teacher. What I finally realized was that when I broke division down into very narrow, specific lessons (i.e. 1 digit divisor, 2 digit dividend, 1 digit quotient), kids grew comfortable with the mechanics of division and when the numbers started to grow they knew just what to do.
This no-prep lesson packet has students practice division computationally and also in problem-solving settings. Each time students solve a word problem they are asked to draw a picture, solve the problem, and then answer in a complete sentence.
The lesson packet includes:
⇒Teacher-Lead Problem Set
⇒Partner Problem Set
⇒Three Pages of Independent Practice
⇒Challenge Page for Early Finishers
⇒Answer Keys for Everything
