Tired of finding the same mistakes in your students' partial quotient problems over, and over, and over, and...? Try these error analysis worksheets to help students identify the mistakes that are most commonly made.
Error analysis problems are a great way to check your students' understanding of a concept. Instead of just solving the same problems again and again on a worksheet, they have to use their critical thinking skills to determine where, if anywhere, the example student(s) went wrong. This forces them to think outside of the box and develop a deeper understanding of the WHY behind the procedures and processes.
This download includes five error analysis problems that practice the partial quotient method of division. There are two 3 digits by 1 digit problems and three 4 digit by 1 digit problems. None of the problems will have remainders!
Long division can be overwhelming for students at first, but this method allows the students to build on their knowledge and understanding of multiplication. Using this strategy, there are many ways to solve the problems. On my answer key, I have provided one common way, but other answers may be acceptable as well.
This perfectly aligns with 4th grade Common Core standard: 4.NBT.6: Find whole-number quotients and remainders with up to four-digit dividends and one-digit divisors, using strategies based on place value, the properties of operations, and/or the relationship between multiplication and division. Illustrate and explain the calculation by using equations, rectangular arrays, and/or area models.
These tasks would be great to use during guided math centers, whole-group centers, or independent practice.
