I love teaching third graders how to divide and multiply. They come in knowing two things for sure about third grade: 1. They will learn cursive and 2. They will learn their multiplication facts. They are so pumped! Then, as memorizing facts becomes more and more difficult, their enthusiasm turns to sour faces, grumbling, and nervous ticks. I don’t want the enthusiasm to fade! I love how much emphasis Common Core places on students mastering their division strategies versus passing timed tests. The purpose of this package is to engage students in learning division strategies and basic facts as they become black belts in division. The emphasis on moving up to a black belt is not about passing timed tests, but mastering strategies and applying these strategies to understand division.
This product can be implemented in math centers and/or as part of your guided math instruction. The tiny task cards can be printed, laminated, and placed on a book ring for quick review and/or assessment. Extra practice sheets are included for students who may need more reinforcement of strategies. The practice sheets can be copied as a class set, or placed in sheet protectors and placed in a binder for centers and/or at guided math. The tiny task cards can also be placed at math center for students to complete independently or with partners. Recording forms are included with data tracking forms. Basic fact tests are included with data tracking forms. As students master their division strategies, they gain more belts. The belts are included and can be kept in math binders, on a book ring, or displayed as a bulletin board. I have included two certificates (one colored and one black-and-white) for you to give students as they move up levels to become a black belt division master!
