Description
Looking for an engaging PowerPoint to teach division to your students? Use this four-lesson PowerPoint to introduce and teach the concept of division using equal groups, arrays, and subtraction involving measurement. Engage students with 4 self-contained interactive lessons that include opportunities for students to practice division using the included division printables.
This division resource introduces partitive division and quotative division, which are both introduced in third grade.
HOW IT WORKS
The PowerPoint is divided into 4 sections:
- Lesson 1: What is Division?
- This lesson covers the concept of division as sharing or fair shares.
- Students participate in a Notice and Wonder situation of dividing cupcakes between friends.
- As the situation changes, students have to divide again to make fair shares among friends.
- Students have an opportunity to follow along and work out the fair shares with the coordinated printables.
- Lesson 2: Division with Equal Groups
- This lesson covers the concept of dividing to make equal groups.
- Students will see that to divide, each group must be equal. The slides give explicit examples of dividing to make equal groups (partitive division)
- Students have an opportunity to follow along and work out the division with the coordinated printables for 5 practice problems.
- Lesson 3: Division with Arrays
- This lesson teaches how to use arrays to divide.
- The slides give explicit examples of how to use arrays to divide.
- Division is explained as a missing factor in a related multiplication sentence.
- Students have an opportunity to follow along and work out the division with the coordinated printables for 5 practice problems.
- Lesson 4: Division as Subtraction
- This lesson teaches how to use a number line to divide through an example using measurement (quotative division).
- Students are shown how division can be thought of as repeated subtraction.
- Using a number line can be prone to errors, but through the animation on the slide, students are shown explicit examples of how to jump backward on a number line to divide.
- Students have an opportunity to follow along and work out the division with the coordinated printables for 5 practice problems.
FEATURES OF THIS POWERPOINT
- Each lesson has explicit examples through animation. Each lesson includes the following components:
- concept building with explicit examples with animation
- mathematical questions to elicit discourse and develop reasoning skills.
- hands-on activities to go from concrete understanding to connecting to multiplication symbols and numbers.
- Sentence frames to help frame understanding and support English Language Learners
- Each slide also has sounds that enhance the animation and keep students engaged though it can be turned off by turning down the volume.]
- Each slide has presenter notes for the teacher. The Presenter's Notes give
- a summary of the slide
- instructions on how to advance the animations
- questions to stimulate mathematical reasoning and discourse
