Knowing how to divide is important, but understanding what to do with the remainder once you get one is one of the harder skills for students to master.

These division task cards include 16 word problems where the students will need to understand what the remainder means in order to answer the question. All of the division problems will be with one divisor and two or three dividends.

There are three main remainder situations included in these cards to align with CCSS 4.NBT.6: Find whole-number quotients and remainders with up to four-digit dividends and one-digit divisors, using strategies based on place value, the properties of operations, and/or the relationship between multiplication and division. Illustrate and explain the calculation by using equations, rectangular arrays, and/or area models.

Round up the remainder (also called “add one more”) – used when the number left over is very important and you need to have enough to include it.
Using the remainder – the left over number is used to answer the question
Dropping the remainder – used when the number left over is not important, or can’t be divided evenly. **Instead of dropping the remainder, you can also elect to teach your students how to divide it, using fractions or decimals. This would be a great way to easily differentiate in your classroom.**

In this pack, I have provided the following options for you to use as you best see fit. My recommendation would be to print them on cardstock and laminate for future use. They would be great to use for math centers, individual practice, or even a whole-group lesson. You can also have students explain which of the above strategies they used to get their answer.
