“Divide, Multiply, Subtract, Bring down…..” Sound familiar? The long division algorithm is here to stay – because it works. We only need to make sure that we make sense of it for our students.

This is a simple process of illustrating each step in long division. Students see what it means to multiply, subtract, and “bring down.” It also helps them make sense of the placement of digits in columns.

The problems contained in these pages all have 2-digit dividends with both 1- and 2-digit quotients. Once students master this, the transition to 3- and 4-digit dividends is easy, and can also be done with grids. An illustration of division with 3-digit dividends and quotients is provided.

These pages include a very detailed, illustrated discussion of the steps in the process.
