Introduce your students to Diwali, the Hindu/Jain/Sikh festival of light! Designed for elementary Spanish Dual Language/Immersion programs, there is no English on student pages.

This packet introduces students to the basic concepts and practices of Diwali. The focus is on Diwali as a celebration of light over darkness, and the common customs families use in celebration (e.g., lighting lamps, sharing sweets, etc). Gods, goddesses and demons are not discussed.

Included are these fun and educational activities:

Diwali vocabulary display posters; 1/2-page format
8 photographs with accompanying Hindi words to display in the classroom during your Diwali unit

Diwali mini-book; 1/2-page format
Included is: a cover to color, 8 pages to read and color (2-4 lines to read on each page), and a glossary to complete. To complete the glossary, students will write basic Spanish definitions of the 8 Hindi words used in the book. (Note: the definitions are found in the reading.)

Comprehension/recall questions
After reading the mini-book, students complete 8 fill-in-the-blank questions and 1 opinion mini-essay.

Venn Diagram
Students choose their favorite holiday, then compare/contrast it to Diwali.

Writing sheet
Open-ended for the writing prompt of your choice; themed, lined

Word search & answer key

Rangoli coloring sheets; 3 designs
Consider having students color with chalk to approximate the colored sand used in rangoli.
