The beginning of this lesson includes a "hook" where students will watch a flash mob at a train station. The flash mob is dancing and singing to the song 'Do Re Mi" from the musical The Sound of Music. This is designed to get their minds on what they will be learning which is solfege.
Kids get so fired up singing Do Re Mi from the Sound of Music! It's super catchy and teaches them solfege just as effectively as the ABC's song teaches them the alphabet!
Students are visually shown the hand signs from Do to Ti. As meditation music that stays in one key (and one major chord) begins playing, students will then turn to partners in EEKK positions as they create a handshake while sing various solfege exercises. This is great ear training for young kids, as the meditation music trains them to sing their exercises in key. This is also great for building community! Great for allowing students to build a bond while creating hand shakes with one another. This also is a great activity to get them working together, and even listening to each other.
Students then learn the song "Do Re Mi" from the Broadway Musical "The Sound of Music". The first Slide is a track that includes the vocals, the slide after contains the karaoke version. Lyrics are posted on both of these slides. Enjoy!
