This unit is a perfect end of year unit for 5th grade. Based on the essential question: Do Wants Outweigh Risks? Students will be doing a close reading of the short story "Dog of Pompeii" and the Informational book--Bodies from the Ash with other texts to complete the unit.
In this unit, students will read both literary and informational (including primary document) text to explore the Ancient Roman city of Pompeii and its destruction by the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius. This unit is designed to introduce teachers into the LAFS and spring forward to the NGSSS for 6th grade Social Studies. The unit does contain opportunities for formative assessments throughout the unit (opinion writing, comparison/contrast text, expository writing, graphic organizers) and one summative assessment (opinion writing) opportunity [if teacher decides to use the culminating writing as a summative] of the unit with the opinion writing addressing the EQ for the unit.
Teachers receive a Google Drive Link to accompanying PPT or Interactive ActivInspire flip chart for their use with this unit.
