Writing and analyzing documents in Social Studies can be a struggle for students. In New York state, students will have to write an enduring issue essay on their regents exam. In the elementary and middle school grades teachers of Social Studies will have to prepare students for that portion of the test. If your state is still using Document Based Question Essays for high stakes assessments the preparation is going to be similar in that writing and analyzing documents in the lower grades will be important.
This product allows the teacher to get input from students on their ability to write and analyze documents. The questionnaire is designed to allow teachers to focus in on students strengths and weaknesses so that they can differentiate instruction. The questionnaires also allows teachers and students to begin to have a dialogue about what students need to work on. The questionnaires ask students about their comfort level with analyzing documents, how they feel about writing prior to a writing assignment, and post-writing assignment questionnaire when their assignment has been graded and returned. The product has been great in looking at student growth and was very helpful to me when I was pursuing my National Board Certification as a Social Studies Teacher.
