A document based inquiry (DBI) is a series of small lessons (4) that help students create their own questions and work together to find evidence to answer essential questions. This DBI focuses on the 2 key shifts with the Common Core Standards; participating in reading/speaking that is grounded in evidence, and students collaborating effectively.
In this Volcano DBI, students will explore photos, videos, and documents. They will come together to express their opinions (when answering questions) using evidence from these several sources. This DBI gets students excited and interested in volcanoes. It also serves as a pre-assessment tool to see what they already know about the topic. The students learn so much by investigating on their own and presenting their ideas.
