This is a sample outline template that students use to organize their thoughts and ideas for a document-based question (DBQ) essay. This template can be modified to fit whatever individual essay question you may assign your students. The structure of the intro, body and conclusion are meant to be the same in order to build students' confidence levels at constructing essays piece-by-piece in an easy-to-understand format.
This outline is the same template as my thematic essay outline template, save for the added "outside info." box. D.B.Q. essays require some relevant outside information about the theme in order to earn above a 3 (4 or 5) on the DBQ essay on the regents exam.
A detailed explanation about how to structure introductions, body paragraphs, and conclusions can be found in my US and Global Regents Guide Packets. Each is a 40-page packet with a variety of essay, D.B.Q. and multiple choice strategies for students. I highly recommend each packet to deepen your social studies literacy instruction.
