This pair of activities are companions for the Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, Journeys - fifth grade selection "Dog News". Activity one has the students categorize facts and opinions and identify opinion clue words. The second half asks students to write an opinion paragraph including main idea, details, and conclusion. These printables mimic the format of questions found on the Smarter Balance ELA practice test. My students score better on comprehension assessments when they use a guided reading exercise such as this. The sorting activity is also available as a Smartboard file.
