This activity can be used to teach students about hereditary genetics (next generation science standard) . Students learn the difference between dominant and recessive traits through dog coat colors. They have to predict the possible coat colors of three generations of dogs by filling out a Punnett square with the dog's inherited traits, then randomly picking these traits out of a bag and using them to predict the next generation! I created this activity for my first graders but I think it can be used at any grade level where the teacher needs a fun, simple and interactive introduction to hereditary genetics.
Along with a worksheet and blank dog bank for the activity this purchase includes a formative assessment/exit slip in which the students create a family tree and answer a few questions.
