Zach, Alice, and Poppy, three lifelong friends have formed close bonds as they played an imaginative game using action figures. Each takes on dramatic roles and creative voices for their play, but Poppy's imaginative talents have led her to playing parts of villains and changing the rules at inopportune times. An odd, frightening doll in Poppy's mother's glass case has been vicariously added to their game as the powerful Queen who puts her mark on anyone who dare disobey her commands. The one power she doesn't have, though, is the power to escape her glass tower.
Now in middle school, Zach faces disdain from father and bullying from older boys who belittle him for playing with action figures and girls. When his father does the unthinkable to stop what he sees as his son's childishness, Zach cannot face being responsible for the destruction of the game and makes the only decision he can face. Will he run away? What will he tell Alice and Poppy? Can the game really be stopped?
Then, when Poppy frees the Queen from her crystal palace, a new voice is heard, the voice of a murdered girl who speaks to Poppy and Zach in their dreams. Or are they nightmares? Can they actually consider the mission which the Queen commands? What if they don't? If they do, how will they travel to their destination? How would Alice escape the overprotective grip of her grandmother? Will the Queen protect them from the crazy man between them and their destination? Will they find any truth in the ghost stories they have heard?
Is it possible that the Queen's bone china face was actually be made from the bones of the murdered girl? What dark secret does her body hold?
Doll Bones is not your usual creepy tale. Or will it turn out to be a ghost story? Once you begin this unsettling story, you most likely won't be able to go to sleep until you finish it. And then, will the Queen have instructions for YOU in YOUR dreams?
