Get students into writing with these 12 original photographs of dolphins. These photographs were taken on a small cruise ship in the Sea of Cortez. We ran into a mega pod of dolphins and they chased the ship. Display digitally as writing prompt of the day or have students write on print outs from master. I will print black and white print outs for my students. They also can make a beautiful bulletin board of student work when completed with custom creative writing. Glue on black construction paper for a crisp matted look for displayed work. Use picture prompts with: poetry objectives, short narrative objectives, main idea, informational text, etc. I also like to copy about six pages of each master and then allow students to choose which prompt page they would like to glue into their writing journal. You could also have all students write from same prompt and hand out writing paper to be stapled to story starter page. Great writers need 20 minutes each day to make writing gains. Explicit mini lessons will keep them moving forward with their voice and conventions.
Check out my writing genre posters too.
