This is a simple tool that serves two purposes: first, it introduces the idea of domain-specific academic vocabulary using relevant examples (Minecraft and skateboarding). Second, it gives students a place to record domain-specific academic vocabulary for a given topic. The chart includes space for a word, definition, and a third box where students choose to record an image, sentence, or example.
I used this during a research project unit. I gave students a few examples, asked them to work in pairs to find a few more, and then had them finish on their own. It would work well in other content areas, or for any research topic in an English class.
This chart aligns with Common Core Writing Standard 2D, but would work well in any context where you are focusing on academic vocabulary. It is ready to print and use in your classroom today!
