Product Description

The following is a worksheet of Donald Trump's Oval Address, delivered on January 8th 2019.

The excerpt provided is from the 1st 7 paragraphs (not the complete address).

There are questions at the bottom of the excerpt that guide students with their annotations. These are:

  1. Which words accurately describe the writer’s tone by his choice of words?
  2. Why did the author choose particular words?
  3. What are the connotations of his word choices?
  4. What ideas are formed by the reader through these choices?

In addition, there is a section that asks students to compare the address to Langston Hughes' poem "I Dream a World" as well as a writing exercise.

I'm using this to teach my students about diction, denotation and connotation.
