Description
Donald Trump’s speech at Mount Rushmore on July 3, 2020 was rather controversial at the time. Given in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic and the social justice movement sparked by the death of George Floyd, the address was critical of the people who were defacing, dismantling, and tearing down monuments.
This speech, though overtly divisive in places, is much more subtle in others, thus making it a good candidate for a close reading activity. President Trump’s understanding of his audience is exceptional and thus a driving factor for many of the allusions he makes.
Those allusions to people and historical events also make this speech challenging for young readers. An analysis of this piece requires a significant background knowledge, so there is an introductory activity designed to build just that.
The body of the activity is a sixteen-page document with a section of the speech on one side of each page and a set of open-ended questions about that section on the other side of the page. Those questions are designed to guide the students through a close reading and rhetorical analysis of the speech. Each page of the speech is provided with questions and without questions, and there are detailed teacher notes included as well.
