Don’t Pick the Worm!
2 Sight Word Games
There are 2 beginning sight word games included. These games are great for learning sight words. 25 words are to be taught the 1st 9 weeks of kindergarten according to the Common Core Standards. I start sight word activities right away because of this.
The following words are used in the games:
here, is, little, up, in. the, come, on, said, to, me, am, too, no, like, look, big, at, my, can, an, see, and, are, we, it, you, go, red, blue, green, yellow, orange, purple, black, brown, white, pink, and number words 0 – 10.
Don’t pick the worm! (Literacy Station or Small Group)
Mix the special apple cards in with the word apple cards. I pick about 10 different words and copy them 3 times so that the children see the word at least 3 times. That gives you 30 word cards plus the special cards. Using all of the words above at one time is too many unless the children should already know a lot of them.
Children will take turns drawing a card. They will keep the card if they read it and place it in the discard pile if they can’t. I usually play the first round letting them keep the card even if they can’t read it. I tell them the word and they repeat it. When playing the second game, they have to read it. If they get a rotten apple they lose all their cards. If they get a worm card, they lose a turn. If they get a golden apple, they take a card from every child. If they get a green apple, they take an extra card from the deck. The child with the most cards after all are drawn is the winner.
Where’s the worm? (Whole Group or Small Group)
Place 8 – 10 apple word cards in a pocket chart. Hide the worm behind one of the cards. The children will guess where the worm is by reading the word on the apple. Play continues until the worm is found. I play several times determining how long each time takes.
